Hackman brought up a good point in an e-mail. When I attached the rules for assigning credits players, he pointed out that last year we could assign contract years to players as we saw fit.
However, the constitution doesn't specify if it was for the first year only. Quite the conundrum.
So I thought I would leave it up to the league and see what you guys thought.
Personally, I like the contract limit as specified in the constitution. I like the challenge of giving the right person the 3 year contract (or the risk of giving the wrong person the 3 year contract). Also, it moves players into the free agent pool a little quicker, which makes our drafts a little more exciting year to year.
Thoughts?

If we are modeling the constitution after its sister league(we used it as framework)...then the contract limits only apply to the first year of the league.
I understand the concept behind maxing 8 credits for the first 4 rounds of draft picks. This makes sure that the top players in the game repopulate the draft sooner.
Without this provision a owner can essentially award 12 contract years to his top 4 draft picks each season. I for one know it's easy to sign a 8th rounder to a 1-year contract, but choosing the right top 4 round pick to take the 1-year deal is harder.
I like the current system
Let's keep hearing those comments, I want a resolution on this by tomorrow PM at the latest (so as to give people a chance to adjust).
I specifically asked this question last year and received the answer that we could assign however we want post-first year.
I (and I imagine others) drafted with that in mind and I don't think it would be fair to change the rules post draft.
Are we going to go back and apply this rule to last year's draft? I am sure there were people that assigned more than 8 credits to the first 4 rounds last year...i know I did. I think I signed my first 5 picks last year to 3 yr contracts...
Please see April 1, 2010 post on this blog
If you want to change this rule, I think it is something we can talk about implementing prior to next year's draft but you cannot have a draft and change the rules the next day.
Good talk
agreed
I'm with Daddy and Bisho on this.
I think we are at a point now that we are going to see a healthy number of sought after players released into the draft pool on a yearly basis.
It made sense to institute restrictions the first year otherwise the Year #2 draft would have really sucked. However, now we are seeing some of those 2 and 3 year deals expire, enriching the talent pool in the draft(s).
Winning!!!
Now that that is resolved how about abolishing the snake draft? I am resigned to not finishing in the top half again and quite honestly I was very excited for the draft as a result.
I could be for that...and maybe make it a lottery for all the teams that don't make the playoffs...repeated poor performance shouldn't mean you get the top pick every year
Heffley; well done on the research (you must be a lawyer). I simply forgot about the conversation from last year. Jake kind of jogged my memory with his e-mail so I thought it would be best to talk about it. Honest mistake, sorry guys.
So everyone can assign contract years as they see fit. Some teams have already sent their submissions in (3K and Ryan); so just go ahead and revise them and resubmit them.
If anyone wants to make any changes to the rules and bylaws, we can do that at the end of this season. So keep a log of changes you would like to put up for a vote and I e-mail them to me and I will keep a running list.
